Although this ballad speaks of incomplete and unidentified romance, one cannot help but notice that that the lady of Shalott is somehow portrayed as an object for male appreciation, in a crisis of self-identity and not strong enough to face the harsh realities of the world, since, at the end of the poem she meets death shortly after breaking out of the castle. Shalott is illustrated as spending the time weaving the scenery she can see through the mirror on the loom for she is cursed and forbidden to look outside the window, which is soon broken when Sir Lancelot makes an entry.
